Why I built it
For the last two years I've been working eight days a week — teaching during the day, teaching in the evenings, and gigging Wednesday through Sunday, at least five gigs a week. I've got a wife and three children. It's what puts food on the table, but it's also my passion. The teaching has been fulfilling and the gigs have been as joyful as they ever have been.
What I haven't been able to sustain is any kind of social media presence, because I just don't have the time to process the footage from gigs.
There comes a point where you can't just release a video recorded on a mobile phone when you do it for a living. Not that I even want to — I take pride in this. I want people to see the best and the worst of me, I want to keep it real, but I don't want people to see the best of me in a poor fashion because I haven't got the equipment or the time to create good videos.
I want to capture moments and share them quickly, the day after it happened. I want people to experience my gigs even if they can't make it to my gigs. I want people to come along on the journey — and my journey in music is doing gigs all of the time. For so long I've not been able to take people on that journey. This changes it.
In the last two weeks I've got good content from eight gigs. Some of those are the same songs, in a different location, with a different audience and a different response. That's 160 songs — and because every one comes out horizontal and vertical, over three hundred finished videos. In a fortnight.
The problem is no longer not having enough content. It's having enough places to post it. That's a better problem to have.
I don't even think any of my videos are going to go viral. That's not really the point. I've been building and embracing my fan base and the friends I've made along the way by sharing what I do with them, so they can enjoy it outside of just my gigs.
If you try it for seven days and you get good footage from gigs, I guarantee you won't look back. Set your phone up on a tripod. Get a clean audio signal — straight out of your system into a laptop, a USB stick, a mobile recorder, whatever you've got. Get decent lighting. This app will give you more content than you know what to do with.
